Specific Techniques

Until recently, there have not been tools available specifically for GPS forensic examinations. Companies such as Berla Corp and Forensic Navigation are truly pioneers in the field. Eventhough tools continue to grow and provide more functionality, there will still be the need to deviate from the published forensic examination standards and move into the exploitation world.

Exploitation is the intended deviation from methods which can withstand admissibility tests in a court of law.

As with any other type of digital device investigation, each model of device presents its own unique set of challenges. Techniques vary depending on the circumstances, condition and manufacturer of the device. Manufacturers’ software is generally adequate to download the contents of a device. There are freeware tools that can also facilitate acquisition but do not allow for analysis. Many times it takes a combination of tools to be able to acquire, analyze and present the findings.

As GPSForensics.org continues to grow we will expand this area and add more content. For now, we have included a short list of freeware tools that you may find useful.
