GPS Hash Project
The GPS Hash Project is a community project that sets forth to create a library of authenticated hash sets that are created by trusted sources using sound forensic techniques. The idea behind this effort is to give forensic examiners a hash set of operating system files such as, base maps, icons, voice files, etc… that were originally installed when the device was manufactured. This will allow examiners to “weed through” thousands of files and quickly identify which ones contain unique data such as device information and user specific data like addresses, phone numbers and tracklogs.
Hash Sets can be created for any device that can be physically imaged. In most cases, these GPS devices are USB Mass Storage devices. The hash sets are created by imaging a device before it has been configured by the user, fresh out of the box from the store, and imaged with FTK Imager or EnCase. The device image is mounted in EnCase and the files therein hashed and a hash set created.
