Device Overviews

Consumer GPS navigation devices generally fall into the automotive, air, marine or handheld category. Manufacturers such as Garmin and Magellan have a wide variety of devices in each category while others like TomTom, Mio and Navigon are more focused on the automotive market.

Not all GPS devices have the inherent ability to connect to a computer and download information.  Most devices, but not all, over $100 USD will have a serial or USB connection and come with manufacturer’s software to upload/download supported data sets. The manufacturer and model dictate the type and amount of information available to be downloaded.

The device overviews are manufacturer specific and contain sections on target files, basic data acquisition techniques, analytical methods, recommended seizure techniques, and currently available tools.  See below list of planned overviews, completed articles are linked:

  • TomTom
  • Garmin
  • Magellan
  • Mia
  • Navigon
